These are very thought provoking pictures. He has food, fuel and shelter, which are the essentials but, apparently, not much else. Is this man poor? I suspect that depends on his state of mind and his social network rather than his possessions. Does he find life harsh, cruel and uncertain, or does he feel safe and secure in an environment he can easily survive in? We don’t know.
I have a shot of an almost equally primitive kitchen that was still being used by foreign workers last year in Doha, one of the richest cities on earth. You don’t have to go to China to see something like this. I’ve noticed that it is often when people start pursuing wealth that life really turns bad for them. As they abandon what they know and journey into a strange new world they become easy victims for unscrupulous individuals.

The darkness adds to the drama of these photo’s. They speak to me of the vast gulf between the “have’s” and the “have not”s in this world and makes me sad. Congratulations for bringing such emotional photos to life.

I’m pulled in by your strong, artistic views of rural China. Your photos illustrate the essence of the beauty of simplicity, show us old ways still viable today in people and places so many of us are unable to experience first-hand. Thanks for opening this door.

That is such a primitive kitchen. Some people have very hard lives. You photos are wonderful.
